This project explores six notorious killers that terrorized the Great Plains region by mapping their murders through time and space. Charles Raymond Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate went on a murder rampage in the winter of 1958. Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith robbed and killed a family of four in November of 1959. John L. Lotter and Marvin Thomas Nissen brutally murdered three people in December of 1993.
The heinous crimes committed by these individuals received national attention and inspired several novels, films, and songs. Through their murders, these killers and their victims became a part of heritage. The goal of this project is to digitally display this heritage while providing essential background knowledge about the killings.
This site provides a timeline and a map for each murderous pair. Each of these is interactive, allowing you to click on links and locations to learn more. Data for these timelines and maps was compiled from historical newspaper and web sources. Timeline JS was used to create the timelines. The maps were created using ArcGIS Online.
